This week’s project is for a quick to make Cuddle Blanket. We call this project a Cuddle Blanket rather than a Cuddle Quilt because technically a quilt is 3 layers. Our Cuddle Blanket has only 2 layers of fabric and no batting. It also does not require a binding, we just sewed, turned, then added some stitching lines to hold the 2 layers together.
I made a Cuddle Blanket for a friend’s daughter when she was just a little kid. She’s 21 now and still loves her Cuddle Blanket. She loves it so much, she wanted to make one for her boyfriend! So this Saturday, she came to my sewing studio and we worked together to make a Cuddle Blanket.
1/2 Yard of coordinating fabric
1 Yard of Minkee
Since the Minkee is typically 60″ wide and the quilt fabric is 45″ wide, we need to add strips of coordinating fabric to the sides or top and bottom of the novelty fabric so that the front and back are the same size.
The front and back should both measure approximately 36″ x 60″.
Helpful Hint: when working with Minkee, it has a tendancy to be slippery and stretchy. We recommend using a walking foot. We also recommend using LOTS of pins!
Add coordinating strips to your novelty fabric so that your back measures the same as your Minkee.
After adding our strips, we added an embroidered personal dedication to the Star Wars fabric, this is an optional idea.
Place front and back Right Sides Together and pin all 4 sides. Helpful Hint: Use lots of pins as the Minkee edges tend to curl. Sew all 4 sides with approximately 1/2″ seam, leaving a 4″ opening at the bottom.
Clip corners and turn. Press around edges of quilt fabric.
Top stitch approximately 1/4″ from edge on all 4 sides, making sure to capture the opening.
To keep the 2 fabrics from separating, it’s a good idea to add some stitching no more than 4″ apart. You can use your preferred method of marking stitching lines, or as we did with the Star Wars fabric, we used the fabric design as a stitching guide. This made our project even quicker because we didn’t spend any time marking our lines.
Cuddle in your blanket and enjoy!
