This week’s garden flag is a very simple and quick project. Please send us a picture of your completed garden flag.
Finished size 12” W x 14” L + Hanging Loops
Windham Fabrics Spin Orange – 12-1/2” x 14-1/2 – 1 EA for front; 6” x 7” – 2 EA for loops
Hoffman Indah Solid Jet – 10” x 11” – 1 EA for cat applique; 6” x 7” – 1 EA for loops
Green or Yellow Scrap for cat eyes
Back: 12-1/2” x 14-1/2”
ALL SEAMS ARE 1/4”, unless noted otherwise.
Make the Hanging Loops
Fold one Spin Orange fabric in half lengthwise and sew with 1/4″ seam along the 7” side. Turn right side out and press. Repeat for remaining piece of Spin Orange and the Indah Solid Black fabric. Set aside.
Print the applique template (click here for full size applique template) and trace the cat and cat’s eyes to the side with the paper grid pattern of the Lite Steam A Seam II. Fuse (following fusing instructions) to wrong side of black fabric and green or yellow eye fabric and cut out shapes.
For our flag, we chose to center the cat not including the tail. To find the center of the flag background (Spin Orange), we folded in half in both directions and pressed with the iron to create creases. We also gently pressed the cat in half at the base, between the ears and from top to bottom, by folding the cat in half.
We lined up our cat folds with the folds in the fabric to place the cat on the background. The Lite Steam A Seam II has a tacky back which allows for you to re-position until it is to your satisfaction.
Remove the remaining paper backing to place the cat and eyes into position. Use the paper template to place the eyes. Once everything looks good, press into place following the pressing instructions that accompany the Lite Steam A Seam II.
Stitch around the raw edges with blanket stitch, zig zag stitch, straight stitch or whatever stitch you desire.
Attach Hanging Loops
Fold loops in half and line up raw edges with raw edge of top of flag front. Place first loop 1″ from the left edge, the center of the second loop at the center of the flag (find the centers of both by folding in half and finger pressing), and the third loop 1″ from the right edge. Check to make sure the space between loops is equal or adjust as needed.
Stitch loops into place with 1/4″ seam.
Do you Wish to Add a Label?
If you wish to add a label as we did to the side seam, place the label 6-1/2″ from the bottom with raw edge of label lined up with raw edge of flag front side. Stitch into place with 1/4″ seam.
Place flag back over flag front right sides together and stitch all the way around, except for a 2” opening at the bottom for turning. Turn right side out and press. Top stitch around flag 1/8” from edge and again 1/4” from edge.
Hang your garden flag and enjoy!
