We’re ready to find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, so this week we’ve prepared a garden flag with a rainbow background and some hopefully lucky four leaf clovers.
Finished size 12” W x 14” L + Hanging Loops
We used Indah Solids by Hoffman Fabrics in these bright colors:
Deep Red 4” x WOF; cut 1 piece 4” x 15” and set the remaining strip aside
Cadmium Orange 4” x WOF; cut 1 piece 4” x 15” and set the remaining strip aside
Lemon Yellow 4” x WOF; cut 1 piece 4” x 15” and set the remaining strip aside
Aruba Blue 4” x WOF; cut 1 piece 4” x 15” and set the remaining strip aside
Purple 4” x WOF; cut 1 piece 4” x 15” and set the remaining strip aside
Kelly Green 6” x WOF; cut 1 piece 4” x 15” and 3 pieces 6” x 7”
ALL SEAMS ARE 1/4”, unless noted otherwise.
Make the Hanging Loops
Fold one Green 6” x 7” fabric in half lengthwise and sew with 1/4″ seam along the 7” side. Turn right side out and press. Repeat for remaining 6” x 7” pieces of GREEN. Set aside.
Making The Flag Front
For our flag, we chose to make a wavy rainbow and here’s how we did it.
Lay the Deep Red strip on your cutting mat face up. Place the Cadmium Orange strip on top of that strip overlapping approximately 1”, also face up. With your rotary cutter, start free motion cutting a gentle curve through both fabrics.
Turn the Deep Red piece so it is Right Sides Together with the Cadmium Orange piece. We use lots of pins when sewing curves together. Also be careful not to stretch as these edges are a bit stretchy. Sew following the curve 1/4″ from the edge, removing the pins as you go. You may find it handy to have a stylus near by to help guide the fabric. Using a hot iron, press towards the Deep Red.
Repeat these steps for yellow, blue and purple fabrics.
Trim to 12-1/2” x 14-1/2”.
Add the Applique
Print the applique template with the four leaf clovers (click here for full size applique template) and trace to the side with the paper grid pattern of the Lite Steam A Seam II. Fuse the drawn four leaf clovers (following fusing instructions) to wrong side of Kelly Green Indah Solid and cut on the drawn lines.
Remove the paper backing from the four leaf clovers and arrange to your liking on the rainbow background. The Lite Steam A Seam II has a tacky back which allows for you to re-position until it is to your satisfaction.
Once everything looks good, press into place following the pressing instructions that accompany the Lite Steam A Seam II.
Stitch around the raw edges with blanket stitch, zig zag stitch, straight stitch or whatever stitch you desire.
Attach Hanging Loops
Fold loops in half and line up raw edges with raw edge of top of flag front. Place first loop 1″ from the left edge, the center of the second loop at the center of the flag (find the centers of both by folding in half and finger pressing), and the third loop 1″ from the right edge. Check to make sure the space between loops is equal or adjust as needed.
Stitch loops into place with 1/4″ seam.
Do you Wish to Add a Label?
If you wish to add a label as we did to the side seam, place the label 4″ from the bottom with raw edge of label lined up with raw edge of flag front side. Stitch into place with 1/4″ seam.
Place flag back over flag front, right sides together and stitch all the way around, except for a 2” opening at the bottom for turning. Turn right side out and press. Top stitch around flag 1/8” from edge and again 1/4” from edge.
Hang your garden flag and enjoy!
