Welcome to week 2 of FREE tutorials for folded quilt fabric Christmas ornaments. Week 1 featured a Pentagon Folded Star Christmas Ornament. If you missed last week, you can read that blog by clicking here.
Inspired by the Scandinavian country’s rich traditions for Christmas we have together this 4 part series of Christmas ornaments using folded fabric techniques which can be used as old fashioned traditions or modernized with your choice of fabric and embellishments. For now we are on to our second ornament.
Quilt Fabric Christmas Ornaments Week 2
FOLDED CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT
Week 2 features a folded Christmas tree ornament. This ornament is made with two 8” circles of fabric, and one 8” circle of double sided fusible stabilizer to give the tree extra body to hold it’s shape and accept our embellishments.
Using a plate or any other round object, draw an approximate 8” circle on your fabric and stabilizer, and cut.
Following the instructions for your double sided fusible stabilizer, fuse the stabilizer to the wrong side of each fabric circle.
Fold the circle in half and press well.
Following the illustrations below, you will fold and press your half circle into a tree as shown using 3 folds in a zig zag style.
Fold the hanging ribbon in half and place the raw edges between the top folds. Place a bow on the front and with matching thread and a zig zag stitch, you can hold the bow in place as well as the hanging ribbon. We shortened the length of our zig zag stitch to 2.0 mm.
Embellish your tree to your desire.
In our first example above, we used beads and sequins that will sparkle as they catch the light from our tree.
In the second example, we used pinking shears on the edges and added some fun buttons shaped like Christmas lights scattered on our tree. You can consider adding heat applied crystals for extra sparkle or small holiday themed buttons would also be a nice touch!
This ornament makes a great decoration or gift!
