A LoveQuilting.com exclusive project, a Quilt Fabric Couch Runner. This project was created for a cat loving friend whose 2 orange tabbies love to lounge along the back of her couch. She lives at the beach and this large scale fabric with cats lounging at the beach coordinated perfectly with her decor.
The couch runner is washable and will protect the back of her couch from accumulating cat hair. It is long enough to drape over the ends, so the cats will always have a perfect spot for lounging.
This project is perfect for floral or other novelty fabrics and can be made in any size to accommodate your couch. The example below is 24″ wide x 110″ long.
Novelty Fabric/Main Print – 3/4 yard; cut into four 12-1/2″ x 20-1/2″
Dark Coordinate – 1 yard; cut into twelve 3″ x WOF strips
Light Coordinate – 1/2 yard; cut into six 1-1/2″ x WOF strips
Cat Block Gray – 6-1/2″ x WOF strip (subcut to six 2-1/2″ x 6-1/2″), 2″ x WOF strip (subcut to twelve 2″ x 2″)
Cat Block Orange – 6-1/2″ x WOF strip (subcut to six 4-1/2″ x 6-1/2″), 2-1/2″ x WOF strip (subcut to twelve 2-1/2″ x 2-1/2″)
Sew one 3″ dark coordinate strip to one 1-1/2″ light coordinate strip. Press the seam towards the dark coordinate. Attach one 3″ dark coordinate to the light coordinate of the strip set you just created. Press towards the dark coordinate. This strip set should measure 6-1/2″ wide. Make 5 of these strip sets.
Subcut these strip sets as follows:
Eight 6-1/2″ x 20-1/2″
Three 6-1/2″ x 12-1/2″
Four 6-1/2″ x 3-1/2″
Attach one 6-1/2″ x 20-1/2″ strip set to the top and bottom of one of the 12-1/2″ x 20-1/2″ novelty prints. Do this for all four novelty print pieces.
MAKE THE CAT FACE BLOCKS
Mark a diagonal line corner to corner on each 2″ x 2″ gray square and each 2-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ orange square.
Place a gray 2″ square on two corners of an orange 4-1/2″ x 6-1/2″, as shown. Sew on the drawn line. Following the picture, do the same with the 2-1/2″ orange squares on a 2-1/2″ x 6-1/2″ gray.
Cut 1/4″ from the sewing line and press.
Attach the cat ears to the cat face. Do this for all 12 cat blocks. We made 2 in this color scheme and reversed the colors for 2 cat blocks.
For the side borders, we attached one cat block with ears pointing up, one 6-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ strip set, one cat block with ears pointing left, one 6-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ strip set and one cat block with ears pointing down. Attach one to the left side of one main print section with the center cat block ears facing left. Attach the other one to the right side of one main print section with the center cat block ears facing right.
Assembling the Couch Runner
Sew a cat block to top and bottom to each of the 6-1/2″ x 12-1/2″ strip sets. We positioned our cat blocks so kitty ears are pointing in opposite directions. Attach this to the right side of one of the main print sections. Repeat for 3 sections.
Sew all main sections together, quilt, bind and enjoy!
