There’s something special about the smells of the holidays. From the pine scent of our Christmas trees and wreaths to the sugar and spice fragrance of holiday baking. I do my fair share of baking at this time of year. But this week, I cooked up something with no calories right here in my sewing room!
This week I created a Gingerbread Man applique. Just like the cookie version, the fabric gingerbread man can be embellished. Probably best to skip the frosting and use fibers, buttons, beads, crystals and more.
Our gingerbread man is going to reside on a place mat. You can also use this applique to create a pillow, add to a kitchen towel to present with a plate of cookies, embellish an apron, or a tote bag.
We didn’t use any dimensional embellishments for our gingerbread man since we will be using it for our dinner plates and utensils and we don’t want them rocking, but in other applications, we suggest using ric rac at the arms and legs, buttons on his tummy, and buttons or googly eyes for his eyes. You can use a small ribbon for the bow at his neck.

Double Sided Fusible: 8” x 9”
All seams are 1/4”.
Attach one border piece to each 14-1/2” side of the background fabric. Press toward the border. Attach remaining border pieces to remaining sides and press towards border, EXCEPT leave a 2” opening on one side for turning.
Trace gingerbread man applique including eyes, mouth, bow, and arm/leg trim, onto double sided fusible. Fuse these to back side of applicable fabric and cut. Assemble gingerbread man to your satisfaction, then place in center of place mat and fuse into place. Use your preferred method to stitch edges (zig zag, blanket stitch, satin stitch, etc.).
Center fusible fleece to wrong side of back fabric and fuse into place. Place place mat front and back right sides together and stitch around entire perimeter. Carefully turn through opening at border to background. Shape edges and press.
To close the opening, take a small piece of double sided fusible, approximately 1/4″ x 2” and place inside opening, align the seam and press closed. You may add some quilting stitches at the border seam to make sure it stays closed during washings.
Mark your place mat with desired quilt lines and quilt. For our place mat, we stitched around the outline of the gingerbread man, then we placed diagonal lines in each direction, 1” apart.
Enjoy your place mat!
