Lavender, from the Latin word lavare, means “to wash”.
Aromatherapy benefits from lavender are plentiful, with no side effects. Lavender aroma invokes calmness from anxiety, aids sleeplessness brought on by insomnia, as well as calming an upset stomach.
When your muscles get tense on your neck and shoulders, a little warmth and the scent of lavender is exactly what is needed to relax. Our lavender neck wrap is filled with a combination of rice and lavender flowers, which can be heated safely in the microwave.
We made this neck wrap with the fill inside a muslin tube, then added a removable cover with more decorative fabric that can be easily removed and washed.
Our cover uses the “envelope” style to avoid any closures or attachments that could cause discomfort or scratches on the portion of the wrap that rests along your neck and shoulders.
Lavender Neck Wrap
Finished Size: 5” x 24”
Long cooking rice – 2 cups
Lavender Flowers – 1 cup
Muslin – 11-1/2” x 24”
Bali Chop Batik Checker Redwood 1 piece 6-1/2” x 24-1/2”; 1 piece 6-1/2” x 6-1/2”; 1 piece 6-1/2” x 20-1/2”
MAKING THE LAVENDER TUBE
Fold the muslin in half right sides together lengthwise. Stitch with 1/4″ seam on the 3 raw edge sides, EXCEPT leave a 2” opening on one short end. Clip corners and turn.
Using a funnel, fill the tube with rice and lavender flowers. The tube will not be filled, this will allow you to move the filling and conform to your neck or shoulders. Feel free to add more rice if desired.
Press the opening so the raw edges are inside and zig zag the opening closed.
MAKING THE COVER
For the 6-1/2” x 20-1/2” and 6-1/2” x 6-1/2” piece of cover fabric, fold one of the 6-1/2” edges under 1/4″ and press. Then fold under another 1/4″, press and stitch to secure. These are the back pieces.
With right sides together, place one back piece over the 6-1/2” x 24-1/2” piece lining up the raw edges. Pin in place. Place the other prepared back piece right side toward the right side of the front piece, lining up raw edges. The folded edges on the back pieces will be overlapping. Pin in place. Sew around all 4 sides with 1/4″ seam. Clip corners, turn and press.
Slip the lavender tube inside the cover. Heat in microwave in 30 second increments until desired temperature. Place on neck or shoulders and feel the relaxation settle in!
